The international community has
long suspected that Iraq has been trying to build nuclear,
chemical and biological weapons. UN inspectors were first dispatched
to Iraq after the Gulf War,
to search for the so-called weapons of mass destruction. In
a speech several months after the
9/11 attacks, U.S. President George W. Bush named Iraq as part
of an "axis of evil" bent
on developing weapons of mass destruction and passing them along
to terrorist groups.
